Noble Hunter
oil on canvas
51 x 76 cm
''Noble Hunter' is a portrait of a whippet in front of a section from the famous 13th Century V&A's Devonshire Hunting Tapestry, 'The Boar and Bear Hunt', (1420-1450). For this painting, I was commenting on the portrayal of the royal hunting dog in art throughout history. Sighthounds have been depicted in art since Ancient Egypt and have been painted as loyal companions and hunting dog dogs to royalty and nobility for centuries. I love the portrayal of the gaze hound in the Royal Hunt in the Devonshire Hunting Tapestries. I thought a section of the tapestry would be a fabulous backdrop to convey a portrait of a modern-day and elegant sighthound.'
