Naval Scene, Charles Martin Powell (1775 - 1824)

oil on canvas
48 x 64 cm

This seascape is a wonderful example of C.M. Powell’s extraordinary ability to capture the movement of vessels on water and the expression of sailors during battle. Powell was self-taught, and being a sailor himself, chose naval scenes as his main subject. He focused on Dutch and English battles on the English shipping channel and depictions of these scenes were exhibited in the Royal Academy, and at the British Institute. His works are now held in numerous collections nationwide, including the National Maritime Museum, the Shipley Art Gallery, and the V&A.
