Hubert De Watrigant - 2025

5th to 30th November

We are again so fortunate to be showing the works of the outstanding Hubert de Watrigant and are delighted that his link and friendship with the OSG continues into a fourth decade. This will be his 10th exhibition with the gallery.

There has again been no pressure from the gallery, this was prerequisite for Hubert to produce this exhibition, it is instinctive for him to paint and there is, we think, more than ever before a total freedom in his work.

His equestrian and racing paintings for which he is world famous, show a deep knowledge of the metier, and as our late chairman, Sir Peter O’Sullevan, put it so succinctly ‘‘He has a sense du cheval’’. His family have been historically involved in the world of breeding and racing, and have all found success in the sport, how lucky we are that there is a world class artist amongst them.

Hubert paints using many mediums, oil, gouache, watercolour, and ink, to help him create a contemporary composition, capturing fleeting moments rather than the obvious. In these he conjures feelings of both Toulouse-Lautrec and Degas.

Whilst racing and equestrian subject matters are ever dominant in this show, there is also a wonderful variety of work; from his depiction of the Vatican’s Swiss Guard, to his inspirational epicentre, Monet, and even elegant diners in the Café Central in Vienna.

De Watrigant’s home and studio is surrounded by the stunning country in South West France; it is a place of peace and tranquility and from where he has produced this wonderful body of work, to give immense pleasure to the view, and indeed to assault the senses.
