After three years in Florence, I drove my VW Beetle packed with nude drawings, cast paintings and beautifully made empty frames to fill, traditionally crafted by fourth or fifth generation artisans, back to England. I had a few commissions under my belt and I had truly found my vocation.
My new studio, the top floor of a barn on the family farm was nowhere near the perfection of the studio in Borgo san Frediano, but it was rent free! Since those days I have converted an old cattle yard, and I am now spoilt with a studio where I spend most of my time. It is a large double storey open space and the walls are covered in paintings.
Growing up in Oxfordshire has given me a love for all things countryside, and in the early years the subject matter for most of my commissions was sporting kit; horseracing, cricket, shooting, fishing, polo and golf. Old leather, wood and metal, challenged me to acquire the “You can smell it” or “Pick it up” accolade.
Since then, I spend as much time as possible doing the thing I love most, working from life as I was taught at Studio Cecil Graves. I visit local antique markets and reclamation yards to find the interesting and paintable, as well as borrowing unique pieces from friends and family to compose my next piece.
Painting my ‘Hanging Fruit’ series has been a new form of challenge for me, having to adapt to the speed of decay and the colour alteration within the chosen subject matter. It is a privilege to be included in the artist list at OSG and I am delighted to showcase my work in my first solo show.

A year was spent perfecting skills in charcoal, pencil and the subtleties of ‘Chiaroscuro’ (light and shade) before progressing to oils. Since returning to England Harriet has spent most of her time working on commissioned still-life and portraits in oil, pencil, pastel and charcoal.
