Jonathan Trowell

18 May - 4 June, 2004

Held in the highest esteem by peers and patrons alike, Jonathan Trowell is an artist of outstanding talent and professionalism. His skills as both painter and draughtsman have earned him significant international acclaim. An ever-growing list of collectors bears testament to Jonathan's popularity and his paintings hang in important collections world-wide.

Jonathan's dedication to his work has seen him pursue a remarkable career, now spanning some 35 years. His artistic training began at Sunderland College of Art, where he was to win a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools. At this early stage of his career his ability was already evident and he was to receive three notable awards, the Landseer Silver Medal for painting, the Bronze Medal for drawing and the Sir James Knott Travelling Scholarship. These achievements were to herald future success and a rapid rise through the artistic ranks.

Variety is a core element of Jonathan's oeuvre. His broad range of subject matter provides revealing insight into his own passions and interests. Horses and scenes from the racing world are his principal subject matter, but evocative paintings of his local Norfolk countryside, highly atmospheric cityscapes and dazzling portraits exemplify the great diversity of his work.

Jonathan's appreciation of his subject matter is obvious. Every painting or drawing he produces, be it a horse galloping to the finish, or a view of the wild and windswept Norfolk coastline is observed with the greatest sensitivity and understanding. He is skilled at depicting the subtle details of each scene - the grace of movement displayed by a field of racing horses, or the ever-changing patterns of light and colour which fall on the landscape, or indeed the city. Portraits of people, dogs and horses are eloquent studies which perfectly capture the spirit of each of his subjects.

It has been a great privilege and a delight for us to have represented Jonathan since the Gallery's inception 18 years ago. He is a man of warmth and sincerity and an artist of unquestionable talent and we have no doubt that this exhibition will be a further landmark in his career.
