Internationally acclaimed sporting artist, Hubert de Watrigant steps into the London limelight once again with his fifth one-man exhibition in Belgravia. A true leader of the field, few can doubt that this outstanding French artist is a front-runner in the world of contemporary racing and sporting painting.
The equestrian world is de Watrigant's great passion and his constant source of inspiration. His paintings encapsulate the very spirit of racing, conveying the exhilaration, energy and colour of the racecourse. Horses, jockeys, trainers and owners – devotees of the turf - are all depicted in his inimitable style.
Marked by outstanding draughtsmanship and a bold combination of materials, including charcoal, pastel, watercolour, gouache and oil, de Watrigant's paintings are unique. He is always experimenting, frequently incorporating collage into his work and making use of unusual surfaces, such as race-cards and past editions of Paris-Turf and the Racing Post. His images are bold, innovative and exude tremendous flair.
Horses are in de Watrigant's blood. His father was a successful breeder and trainer living in South West France, where Hubert grew up and now spends an increasing part of his time. An early obsession with sketching horses in his father's stables was to forecast his future talent. He spent his early career in Paris, taking a number of different jobs, before devoting himself to painting full-time and becoming a professional artist in 1976. Hubert's choice of subject matter was naturally determined by his own interests, his deep understanding and love of horses, as well as racing and the racecourse and his artistic reputation has grown steadily ever since. His family, including his brothers who all work within the field of racing and bloodstock have no doubt helped fuel Hubert's passion for all things equestrian. Recently, he was proud to inherit his grandfather's racing colours which are currently being carried with some success in France. This has coincided with Hubert himself becoming a grandfather, albeit a youthful one!
De Watrigant has exhibited worldwide and has an extensive international clientele. His paintings are to be found in prestigious collections in Great Britain, Europe, Japan, the Middle East and the USA. Recent notable commissions include works for Shadai Farms and Hermès.
We open this 2007 exhibition of paintings with great expectation - Hubert de Watrigant is poised to thrill us again!
