ATMOSPHERE, ACTION, DRAMA - Hubert de Watrigant brings the racecourse to life before our eyes. The equestrian world is de Watrigant’s great passion and his constant source of inspiration. His paintings encap-sulate the very spirit of racing, conveying the exhilaration, energy and colour of the racecourse. Horses, jockeys, trainers and owners & devotees of the turf - are all depicted in his unique and inimitable style.
Horses are in de Watrigant’s blood. His father was a successful breeder and trainer living in South West France, where Hubert grew up and now spends an increasing part of his time. An early obsession with sketching horses in his father’s stables was to forecast his future talent and success. He spent his early career in Paris, in a variety of different occupations, before devoting himself to painting full-time. He became a professional artist in 1976, from whence his reputation grew rapidly. His choice of subject matter was naturally determined by his own interests, his deep understanding and love of horses and the racing world. Today, he is internationally respected as a contemporary master of equestrian and racing art.
This will be Hubert’s fourth one-man exhibition at The Osborne Studio Gallery and his work has never been in greater demand. His paintings are marked by their outstanding draughtsmanship and bold combination of materials, including charcoal, pastel, watercolour, pen and ink, gouache and oil.
De Watrigant is always experimenting, frequently incorporating collage into his work and making use of unusual surfaces, such as race-cards and old editions of Paris-Turf. His images are bold and innovative and convey a tremendous degree of skill and flair. Each painting speaks of de Watrigant’s deep appreciation and knowledge of his subject matter.
De Watrigant has exhibited worldwide and has an extensive international clientele. His paintings are to be found in prestigious collections in Great Britain, Europe, Japan, the Middle East and the USA.
We open this exhibition of new work by one of Europe’s finest sporting artists with delight and anticipation. His paintings always exceed expectation.
